Associate Professor Lewis MacKinnon

Associate Professor Lewis MacKinnon

Associate Professor Lewis MacKinnon is the owner and principal GP at Skye Medical Armadale.

Lewis was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland and studied Medicine at the highly reputable University of Glasgow Medical School, graduating in 2008.

His medical training took him to north-east England where he gained experience across a range of hospital specialities from surgery and emergency medicine to internal medicine and psychiatry.

His passion for teaching was invoked with a research and lecturing position at Durham University Medical School, where he taught anatomy, physiology and clinical skills to medical students.

Even today, Lewis finds time around seeing patients to teach and mentor medical students from UWA, Notre Dame and Curtin as well as coaching GP trainees here in Armadale.

Lewis chose to specialise in General Practice. Out of all specialities available, this was the one that most appealed to Lewis and suited his persona.

He enjoys the continuity of care and being able to foster long-term relationships with his patients and their families – he genuinely enjoys helping and being part of a caring community.

Upon completion of his speciality training, Dr MacKinnon moved to the remote Scottish island of Islay. With a small group of GPs, he provided primary and emergency care to the island 24/7.

Islay is famed world over for its A grade whiskey and it was here that Lewis learnt to appreciate the ‘art’ of whiskey – with lots of practice, rest assured!

Dr MacKinnon also proudly served as an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corps based in Glasgow. His role in the armed forces involved leading and communicating with a medical team under high stress and he has benefited from excellent training in leadership and clinical management having also completed his officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

In March 2015, Lewis emigrated from Glasgow to Western Australia and is proud to call Perth and the city of Armadale his home.

Lewis started working as soon as he moved to Armadale and a little over a year after arriving, with a little help from Steph the Business Manager, founded Skye Medical Armadale.

Since starting the practice, Lewis has also grown his family with the addition of 2 wonderful boys.

Outside of his clinical commitments, Lewis also works with RACGP Training as a Senior Medical Educator responsible for the training of GP registrars in Perth.
His title of Associate Professor comes with his role as the Director of Clinical Education (Placements) at Curtin Medical School.

Lewis is also committed to being an advocate for and advancing the profession of General Practice and is a member of the WA RACGP committee.
He also takes that advocacy for general practice and patient centred care to his position as a Board Member with North Metropolitan Health Services.
